President Rodrigo Duterte Plans to Extend Martial Law in Mindanao for the Whole Year!

  • Rodrigo Duterte wanted to extend the Martial Law in Mindanao!
  • He said this is due to the ongoing conflict in the area.
  • What are the details about this? Watch the video below!
On May 23, 2017, at approximately 10:00 in the evening, President Rodrigo Duterte declared Martial Law over the whole island of Mindanao. This was due to the numerous conflicts and incidents of violence that have happened in the area, particularly in Marawi.
When Duterte declared Martial Law, initially there were mixed reactions, both from the citizens and the government officials. Even famous personalities couldn’t help but express their own thoughts about it as well. However, recent reports claim that the president is planning to extend it until the end of the year.
According to CNN Philippines, Duterte asked the Congress to extend Martial Law in Mindanao until December 31, 2017. This was confirmed by his own presidential spokesperson, Ernesto Abella. The president asked Senate President Koko Pimentel and House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez to extend it for five more months.

According to the source, Abella revealed in a press conference that the “looming situation in Mindanao has to be addressed.” In addition, Duterte also asked for the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus to be extended as well.
He wrote in a letter that was addressed to the spokesperson: “I have come to the conclusion that the existing rebellion in Mindanao, which has prompted me to issue Proclamation No. 216 on 23rd May 2017, will not be quelled completely by 22nd July 2017.”
The president continued: “For this reason, because public safety requires it, I call upon the Congress to extend until 31st of December 2017 or for such a period of time as the Congress may determine the proclamation of martial law and the suspension of privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in the whole of Mindanao.”

Under the Philippine Constitution of 1987, Martial Law in Mindanao would ideally be lifted on July 22, 2017, following the 60-day limit that was established by the law. If it should be lifted or extended, the administration needs to seek the Congress about the matter.
The source added that Duterte also suspected the rebels in Mindanao were using money from their drug dealing in order to fund their activities.
