- President Duterte was absent during the Independence Day rites.
- Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella claims that the President was too tired from his other presidential duties.
- Is the President okay? Find out right here!

President Duterte was conspicuous in his absence during the Philippine Independence Day rites held on June 12. Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella announced that the President would be unable to attend because he needed rest after a busy day attending to the issues caused by the ongoing conflict in Marawi.
The rites were instead led by Vice President Leni Robredo as President Duterte was represented by the secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Alan Peter Cayetano.
Understandably, President Duterte’s absence drew a lot of questions and criticisms. Senator Antonio Trillanes IV took a swipe at the president, saying that the man possessed no discipline.
Apart from that, there are plenty of citizens who are concerned about the well-being of the president. Opposition lawmakers are reportedly asking for regular updates on President Duterte’s health as they see it as a “national security issue.”
So what’s the real score? To bring light to the subject, Presidential Assistant Christopher “Bong” Go released photos of himself together with the President inside Malacañang.

If that’s not enough for you, there’s even a picture of the President flashing a wry smile:

Contrary to what others believe, it looks like the President is alive and well. In one of the pictures, President Duterte was even seen browsing through some paperwork.

According to Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella, President Duterte is just, “taking some time off to rejuvenate.” He said that the president went through a rough 23 days on the road while “fulfilling his martial law supervision” so he needed some time off.
He didn’t say when the President will return to make public appearances but he did say this:
“Nothing to worry about in terms of major sickness.”
