It was a different mood on social media on August 4 as netizens saw a lighter side to legendary OPMsinger-songwriter Jim Paredes when addressing President Rodrigo Duterte. The outspoken and verbal critic of the president actually thanked Duterte for signing the law which provides free tuition fees for state universities and colleges.
Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra made the announcement regarding the new law.
During a news conference in Pasay City, Guevarra said:
“Free tertiary education in SUCs is a very strong pillar or cornerstone of the President’s social development policy.”“He weighed everything and came to the conclusion that the long-term benefits that will be derived from the well-developed tertiary education on the part of the citizenry will definitely outweigh any short-term budgetary challenges.”
Following the announcement, Jim Paredes went on Twitter to thank President Duterte for signingRepublic Act 110931 also known as the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.

The member of legendary musical group Apo Hiking Society also thanked Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV for writing the bill. He commended both politicians, saying “cooperation, inclusivity, good intentions make things possible.”

This is a somewhat unexpected act for Jim Paredes, who’s been critical of the president’s policies and attitude since Duterte took power. He has criticized Duterte for declaring Martial Law in Mindanao as well as his off-color jokes which many have deemed inappropriate.
