They came by the thousands on Saturday to Brisbane, Australia in hopes of seeing the Manny Pacquiao of old. Instead, more than 55,000 saw an old Manny Pacquiao, and an incredibly controversial decision.
In a stunning upset, hometown hero Jeff Horn relied on relentless pressure and big heart to score a disputed unanimous decision over Pacquiao at Suncorp Stadium.
Horn (17-0-1, 11 KOs), a massive underdog, captured the WBO welterweight title by judges scores of 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113. CBS Sports scored the fight even (114-114) while most had it in favor of Pacquiao.
At 38, Pacquiao looked a step slower throughout and, at times, a shadow of his once great self despite entering the fight firmly entrenched on most pound-for-pound lists. But the Filipino senator, no stranger to wildly disputed defeats following his 2012 loss to Timothy Bradley Jr., was incredibly gracious in defeat.
"I didn't expect that ... that's part of the game," Pacquiao said. "That's the decision of the judges. I respect that."
Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KOs), who had a rematch clause in his contract, showed no hesitation in wanting a second chance.
"Absolutely, yes. We have a rematch [clause] so no problem," Pacquiao said. "Yeah, yeah. He beat me."
